Halloween Potions, Halloween Art, Halloween Dress Up, Halloween Party, Halloween Science Experiments...

Halloween was certainly in the air in the First Class this week. We learned some Halloween poems called "Halloween Spooks" and "The Witch's Brew."

There was so much excitement when we got to make our very own witch's brew. We took turns adding in different ingredients like eyeballs and spiders and giving our brew a good stir. Take a look at us at work and how our brew turned out...

We then worked together to write A Potion including the ingredients we would use and the steps to be followed to make the brew. We engaged in some thought showering and came up with great lists of ingredients, bossy verbs and time connectives. Each of us then got a chance to come up with our own potions. We got to decide what our potion would do if someone drank it, what ingredients would be needed to make it and we wrote out the steps needed to make the potion. Some of us got to read out our potion by sitting in the author's chair. It was so exciting hearing what our friends decided their potions would do. Some would make people disappear, others would shrink people while others would turn people into different creatures! Below is a picture of our Magic Potions and the pumpkins we decorated for art.

We painted a witch's brew to tie all our learning together. Here we are busy at work!

On Friday 28th October we dressed up for Halloween. Ms Hill could barely recognise us! Well done to all the boys and girls for the great effort. Here we are all dressed up in our costumes...

We had a little Halloween celebration in our class. We tried some Báirín Breac and the ring was found! We shared sweets and played some Halloween games like Apple on a String, Halloween Do you Dare Sensory Box and Pin the Spider on the Web.

To finish off a fantastic day of Halloween celebrations we did a science experiment to make Halloween Ghosts. Each group got a turn to do the experiment and every group member had a job to do. We watched the reaction between the vinegar and baking soda and were amazed when the balloons inflated! A great day was had by all. Have a lovely mid-term break everyone! 😀

Junior Achievement Programme

We have really enjoyed participating in the Junior Achievement programme this year. We have been doing the Our Families theme with Nessagh over the last 6 weeks and have really enjoyed learning all about the different ways we can help on our local communities, the difference between needs and wants as well as becoming entrepreneurs coming up with our own ideas for a cake business! We made thank you cards for Nessagh and gave them to her after our last session. We were all so delighted to receive our certificates!

Designing and Making a Scarecrow and Scarecrow Drawings

We were so excited to enter the local Pumpkin Patch's Design a Scarecrow competition. We looked at photographs of scarecrows and brainstormed the kind of things we would need in order to make our own scarecrow. We made a list and then we began to bring in the items. Once we had gathered everything we needed we voted on the best trousers, shirt, wellies, hat etc to use to make our scarecrow. We worked together to dress the scarecrow and filled his body with straw. Ms Hill helped us with some of the tricky bits like tying the twine and attaching the head. We took turns designing our scarecrow's face. We are really happy with how he turned out. He is now on show for all to see at the Pumpkin Patch and we hope he is having a nice time there and helping out to keep the birds away from the lovely pumpkins! We have our fingers crossed for the Pizza Party prize but if we don't win we won't be too disappointed as we had so much fun making our scarecrow.  Thanks to everyone for b

Garden Bird Projects

We are practising many skills during our garden bird groupwork projects. We are learning how to source information, rewrite key facts in our own words as well as building on sharing, listening, taking turns and working together. We are having great fun and we are learning lots about birds we see in our gardens and school grounds. Stay tuned for the finished projects!
